The Whispering Waka

In a bright village nestled beside a sparkling river, lived a family known for their beautiful carvings and their strong connection to the ancient stories. Little Kai loved listening to his grandmother tell tales of brave navigators and wise guardians. Kai’s dad, Hemi, was a talented woodcarver but he sometimes got very upset and his voice would boom like thunder. This made Kai and his older sister, Hana, feel like little birds caught in a storm.

One day, the village elders announced the annual Waka (canoe) Race. The villagers were excited to decorate their waka with bright colours and feathers. Kai and Hana dreamed of helping their family win with a waka crafted by their father. But Hemi wasn't feeling good inside, his heart sometimes felt heavy and his hands didn't carve like they used to.

Hana, who was known for her calm spirit, decided to help her dad in a different way. She started to tell him the stories her grandmother had told them, focusing on the ones about finding strength and kindness. Kai, who was small but quick, ran around collecting smooth stones from the river, which he gave to his father to use as he carved the Waka.

Together, they started to build the 'Whispering Waka', named so because of how the wind seemed to whisper through its carvings when it glided on the water. It wasn't easy, Hemi had to be very patient and gentle but the story telling helped him to change.

On the day of the race, the Whispering Waka looked magnificent. Kai and Hana cheered as the family raced, their waka gliding smoothly and swiftly. They won! As the sun set, Hemi gathered his children and hugged them tightly. He explained that he was sorry for the times he let his anger take over and he promised to always listen to their stories and work hard together to create more beautiful things.

From that day on, the Whispering Waka reminded everyone in the village that even when things are tough, with love, understanding and the power of stories, even the biggest storms can be weathered, and the most beautiful things can be created.
